This month has been a whirlwind and winter break is right around the corner.
In reading we just finished up identifying and discussing the traits of characters in books. At home it would be helpful for students to continue practicing this skill by describing the characters they are reading about to you. It is also important for students to use evidence from the text to provide proof of the character traits. We have also been reviewing story elements, identifying main characters, setting, problem, and solution. Students have also been working on summarizing their reading by discussing/writing what has happened in the beginning, middle, and end. We have been focusing the month around gingerbread stories and comparing/contrasting the different stories.
In math we just finished up our number sense unit. Students are still need extra support in using the UPSC method. At the beginning of the year I sent home with all students a UPSC example, strategy chart examples, and an informational sheet for bedtime math. Please have students working on this at least once a week with your support. Currently we are working on reading, building, and analyzing graphs. When we return from break we will be working on probability and predicting outcomes based on a data gathered from experiments. Students will make predictions using vocabulary such as certain, likely, unlikely, or equally likely.
We have been working on writing our opinions and persuading others to agree with us. We have also been writing about the books we are reading by writing about the beginning, middle, and end. We will begin working on how to writing, where students will write steps to complete/make something. Like how to build a gingerbread house.
We just finished up our unit on matter and will be beginning our unit on Weather. Students will learn about Severe Weather and the tools used to help predict what weather is on its way towards us!
Month of December/ January:
December 21st-->students will build their own gingerbread houses.
December 22-January 2nd-->winter break
January 3rd-->Back to school from winter break
